Authors: Karnopp, Marla
Abstract: This document details an ethnopharmacological study that investigated the use of medicinal plants and herbal remedies by the community of a school in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. The objectives were to identify the main types of medicinal plants, the parts of the plants used, and their herbal indications, as well as to promote the rational use of medicinal plants and herbal remedies. The proposed methodology involves a descriptive research approach, being an exploratory field study that presents qualitative, quantitative, and contextual nature. A total of 55 (fifty-five) people participated in the research, including 33 (thirty-three) males and 22 (twenty-two) females, with ages ranging from 18 (eighteen) to 76 (seventy-six) years, with the age of 18 (eighteen) years being the most prevalent (n=27). Regarding ethnicity, 45 (forty-five) individuals identified as white and 10 (ten) as black. The school community casually uses medicinal plants when faced with an illness, particularly using the leaves of the plants and preparing them as tea through the infusion technique. Consumption is generally influenced by parents, being acquired within the family, from friends, and acquaintances, who have their own production. The ethnopharmacological research on the use of medicinal plants and herbal remedies showed that out of the 58 (fifty-eight) medicinal plants mentioned in the data collection instrument, there was a higher prevalence of mint (n=44) and yerba mate (n=40), especially because they are known for their medicinal properties and/or by the gaucho culture. To contribute to the school community, a brochure on the rational use of medicinal plants and herbal remedies was developed.

Abstract: Given the vast Brazilian flora, the advances in scientific research and the demand for integrative and complementary alternatives by users of the Unified Health System (SUS), arises the importance of recognizing the use of Phytotherapy in the context of Primary Care. The phytotherapy is one of the 29 integrative and complementary practices for use in the SUS, which can be implemented in municipalities, complementing the scheme of treatment and health promotion of the population. This study aims to evaluate the technical feasibility of implementing phytotherapy in the municipality of General Câmara/RS based on current legislation, considering the availability of human resources, infrastructure, and the interest of the population. This is a quantitative descriptive study. A semi-structured questionnaire with open and closed questions was applied to managers, technical professionals and users of the SUS in General Câmara/RS. The research was applied between April 24, 2023 and May 12, 2023, where the questionnaires were applied to the target audience. From the questionnaires applied, a survey of the answers was conducted, and from there, the feasibility study of the implementation of herbal medicine in the municipality of General Câmara/RS. In the development of the project it was concluded that the implementation is feasible, because there are sufficient human resources, adequate infrastructure, and interest of 100% of managers in offering the service, 96.2% of professionals are interested in learning about herbal medicine and use in their demands and as the 100% of users interviewed in the survey.

Abstract: The growing number of elderly people in the world population has caused a significant change in the morbidity and mortality profile, especially regarding the prevalence of chronic degenerative diseases. Considering this context, there is an increase in the use of medications, which have a significant influence on increasing the longevity and quality of life of the elderly, if used correctly, otherwise they are capable of generating problems related to medications, worsening living conditions. In view of the various changes that occur in the body of elderly patients, interference may occur in the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of drugs, thus, reviewing pharmacotherapy can help identify and reduce problems related to drugs, positively interfering with the state of health and in the quality of life of the elderly. Thus, the present study aimed to identify the problems related to medication in the elderly in a Long Stay Institution (ILP), through the review of their pharmacotherapy. For this purpose, a cross-sectional observational study was carried out, which allowed reviewing and identifying problems related to pharmacotherapy for the elderly in a long-stay institution. Elderly patients of both sexes, from the long-stay institution, who used two or more medications were included in the study. Nine seniors were selected, seven women and two men, aged between 75 and 94 years. All had a diagnosis of one or more pathologies, chronic or not, and each elderly person uses between seven and twelve medications for continuous use. In total, ten problems related to pharmacotherapy were identified, and all elderly people had problems related to administration and adherence to treatment, selection and prescription, and treatment safety, of which only four elderly people needed blood pressure monitoring . Forty-six drug interactions were identified, the majority of which were of a moderate degree and pharmacodynamic mechanism. After evaluating the data, a care plan was drawn up with interventions to be carried out, which were pointed out to the institution's nurse, responsible for carrying out the intervention or not. This care plan consisted of interventions such as referral to the doctor, re-education and consequent change in the time of administration of some medications, due to the occurrence of drug interactions, as well as requests for blood pressure monitoring. It is expected, with clinical practice, that there will be an improvement in the quality of life of institutionalized elderly people, given the problems related to pharmacotherapy that were identified.

Abstract: Lip topical formulations are intended for application to the skin or certain mucous membranes. Lipsticks and lip balms are topical formulations intended for application to the lips only. Mentha x piperita L. is the plant from which peppermint essential oil is extracted, commonly used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry for the treatment of various diseases. Its highest concentration compounds are menthol and menthone, and in lower concentrations other terpenes such as Neo-menthol, D limonene and isomenthone. It has proven antiseptic, antibacterial and antiviral properties. The objective of this work was to develop and evaluate the appearance and physical-chemical characteristics of topical lip formulations containing essential oil of peppermint, where through the conduction of studies of accelerated stability and preliminary stability by ice-thaw cycle, it was sought to evaluate the viability of incorporating OEHP in obtaining pharmaceutical formulations for lip application (lipsticks and lip balms). Peppermint essential oil was characterized by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) of commercial pure OEHP and OEHP extracted from the formulation after stability tests. The lipsticks and lip balm did not show signs of instability after the stability tests and there was a small variation in pH. The appearance has undergone minimal consistency changes. The characterization of the essential oil showed contents of 43.50% of menthol and 24.07% of menthone, being the two most relevant markers. It can be concluded that the lipsticks and lip balm remained stable and with minimal pH changes. The results obtained are promising for the development of pharmaceutical formulations for topical lip use using essential oils in their composition.
