Síndrome de Down : reações dos pais e ações de enfermagem.

Abstract

The existence of individuals with Down Syndrome (SD) memorable time, before being specifically known by this term, the genetic disorder had other denominations. The most common characteristic in these children is mental deficiency. The moment of birth is usually for families a moment of joy, celebration and renewal of life. The families of children with Syndrome patients present a greater overload at all levels: social, psychological, financial and also in the care of the child. As for health professionals, they should be very cautious at the time of diagnosis and in the postpartum period, due to the fragility of the mothers. It is necessary to wait some time for the mother to absorb the news and she begin to understand about the diagnosis of the syndrome. The role of the nurse is to make changes, plan a systematic intervention with the family and develop training programs with parents so that they can help their child in their development. Considering this context, a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research was chosen in a unit of the Association of Parents and Friends of the Exceptional (APAE), located in a municipality in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) ). In order to understand the reactions and feelings of the parents before the birth of a child with DS, also analyzing the role of the nurse. In March 2017 a questionnaire was applied with parents of children with DS who proposed to participate in the research, with semi-structured questions, where the researcher was able to better understand how the parents' reaction to the situation is. With the conclusion of the research we can see that the main feelings of the parents towards the birth of a child with syndromic characteristics are frustration, sadness, rejection and denial, being the guidance and support of the nursing team of extreme importance. That is why we, future professionals, should be prepared to serve these people and their families.
