Efeito do tratamento periodontal em pacientes portadores de diabetes mellitus : revisão de literatura.

Abstract

Despite there are many studies about the relationship of the periodontal disease with the diabetes mellitus, the desinformation by part from the dental surgeons about the subject is still present. Besides that, the majority of the pacients unknown the existing relationship between both diseases, so they don’t make a regular therapy at the periodontist, becoming a silent problem, and when the periodontitis is diagnosed, it is already found at a high stage. This study had as purpose of doing an analysis through a literature review about the effect of the periodontal treatment on pacients carrying diabetes mellitus. Both diseases could provoke a high production of proinflammatory cytokines, hyperglycemia, leading to a deletery effect into the periodontal tissues and difficulty in the metabolic control of the pacient, which explained the bidirectional relationship between these. Therefore, with the realization of scaling and root planning there was a significant decreasing in the glucose levels. Thus, through the control of the glucose levels present in the individual’s blood, the effect from the periodontal therapy in these pacients was positive.
