Abstract

The importance of a father in the constitution of the subject, or another person that meets this function is present in Freud's writings. However, the changes that have happened in the contemporary time in the ways of being a family and being a couple , have directly affect the ways of being a woman and a man, and consequently to be mother and father. With all these changes, what we took notice is the increase of childless couples by reason of choice. What we realize among the studies published about the non-motherhood /parenthood, was a greater number of studies that observe an analysis from the woman’s point of view. Thereby, this work aims to give visibility in order to know what the men think about the choice by non-offspring. For this purpose five men were interviewed who socialized their desire for not having children. From their narratives and from the theoretical perspective of psychoanalysis, we sought to prove the ways of expression about this non-desire in their speeches, making intend with some fundamental concepts in the range of this theory. Among the findings, we noted conflicts regarding the parenthood that shows the need to reflect about the compulsion concepts about their own reproductions, identification and also about the desire for fatherhood and the desire to have children. From this work we concluded the importance of new studies in the parenthood’s area, helping thereby in the suffering’s issues that we have nowadays in the contemporary clinic and that can be directly linked to parenthood, or even to the non-parenthood.
