Abstract: This study illustrates the reality of teaching environmental science in Santa Cruz do Sul’s current educational system by comparing the subject matter knowledge of primary school students at public and private schools. The purpose of this study is to justify the need for a dynamic approach in the education of environmental sciences that considers the various social economic differences of the institution where students being taught the subject. At its core, this study was looking analyze, monitor, and develop a proper methodology applicable to elementary schools that bridges the engagement of the subject amongst the various types of schools in Santa Cruz do Sul, both public and private schools.Through a qualitative methodology, called “Modulos Integrativos Adaptados”, an environmental science questionnaire was developed using common colloquial themes and provided before and after an in-class workshop about environmental science, responses were collected from students at each institution. One of the observations the questionnaire was able to provide was the fairly large difference in the number of correct responses students were able to provide about the subject, with about 53% for public school students compared to about 60% among students from private schools. But when these results were then compared to those of their teachers, the difference was even greater, highlighting a possible failure among teacher &amp; student relationship within the current education system. Education and educating students, even on the subject of environmental science, is more than just a review of knowledge it's also a commitment to the sustainable development of the nation.</description>
