Abstract: The pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused a public health crisis worldwide. The clinical manifestations and severity of symptoms are slowly being clarified, however, it is already known that severity increases with age, with older people having higher mortality, suggesting that molecular pathways underlying aging contribute to the severity of Covid-19. Telomeres are structures that are located at the ends of chromosomes and are being widely investigated, the length of which is related to inflammatory processes and biological age. The Covid-19 virus, SARS-CoV-2 can infect many different types of cells, causing the process of tissue regeneration and renewal to increase. Studies have indicated a relationship between Covid-19 and telomere length, and the size of this structure may have implications for disease severity.Based on this, the objective of the study is to evaluate the severity of symptoms in people who have been infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the relationship with telomere length, in order to understand the severity and gravity of the disease in individuals with shorter telomeres. The study included people who had been infected with SARS-CoV-2, whose symptoms were severe, mild, or asymptomatic. The analyses were performed on 67 participants, of which 36 (53.7%) had already taken some dose of the vaccine. Most participants were in the age range of 21-40 years (43.3%). From the participants analyzed, all showed at least some type of symptom, with the most prevalent symptom being fatigue, presented by 59 (88%) people and the least prevalent was cutaneous eruption 11(16.4%). In addition, the participants were mostly shown to have shortened telomeres 38(56.7%). From this study, it was possible to advance the understanding of why some develop the severe forms of Covid-19 and others do not and explaining some unique epidemiological aspects of the SARS-COV-2 pandemic and its relationship to telomere length.

Abstract: Viral hepatitis is a public health problem in Brazil and in the world – affecting mainly the socially disadvantaged parts of society; which leads to a great impact on morbidity and mortality. Currently, viral hepatitis is included in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is in SDG 3 and target 3.3 the major health objective, through the proposal of a healthy life and promotion of well-being for all, at all ages regardless of gender, while the second establishes that by the year 2030, the elimination of epidemics of HIV, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases, in addition to the specific fight against hepatitis, waterborne diseases, and other communicable diseases. The WHO's global targets for eliminating HCV by the year 2030 establish that 80% of eligible cases are treated, a 90% reduction in the incidence of new infections, in addition to a 65% reduction in mortality related to liver pathologies. In 2020, the southern region of Brazil had the highest rate of diagnoses of cases confirmed by the hepatitis C virus, with 12.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Since the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, had a higher rate than the national one (4.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), with 47.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants - the highest rate among the country's capitals. In order to carry out this research, secondary data regarding the testing for HCV carried out in the intervention project “Projeto Procura-C: SUS em Busca de Todos” carried out by the Superintendency of Penitentiary Services and the State Secretary of Health of Rio Grande do Sul partnership with the Ministry of Health. The objectives being to estimate the prevalence and incidence of positive anti-HCV cases, as well as to georeference the confirmed cases of HCV by municipality; as well as analyzing the sociodemographic characteristics of this population. In total, 2,747 individuals deprived of liberty were tested, which represents 6.34% of the total number of inmates in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in November 2022. A total of 73 tests were considered positive, which reflects a prevalence of 2.65%. There were no new cases identified in this study, so the incidence was zero. All positive cases were already known to the prison health team, as they were identified in the screening at the prison institutions and referred for staging and treatment for HCV. The data found reflect the effectiveness of the entrance services of the prison system in Rio Grande do Sul, since all cases were previously detected; exemplifying the correct targeting of prevention services, early diagnosis and adequate treatment of cases of Hepatitis C and other infectious diseases, contributing greatly to the micro elimination of the disease.
